It was five o’clock, and the guard was just swinging shut the massive, black iron gates of the castle. Deb & Joe Corcoran pulled up to a screeching halt. The couple leapt out of their rental car and dashed up to the guard, begging him to let them in for just a few minutes. “We’ve come all this way,” Joe implored. “Halfway around the world!” added Deb. The guard hesitated for a moment, then pulled the gates back open. “Come on then,” he said, “but make it quick.” Deb & Joe walked through the castle’s empty grounds to one of the world’s most famous locations, and within 10 minutes, each of them had kissed the Blarney Stone.
That particular travel story is a favorite of Deb & Joe Corcoran’s. “We had the chance to walk alone at Blarney Castle, with nobody else around,” says Deb. “You see everything with different eyes.” Indeed, whenever this lively couple travels, they rarely opt for the guided tour or set schedule. You’re more likely to find them off the beaten path, seeking out the hidden spots and absorbing as much of the culture as possible. Deb & Joe are both Pennsylvania natives. Each is the eldest child in their families and was raised in a strict and loving home. Their most striking common bond, however, is a shared drive to not only keep expanding their knowledge, but also to constantly look for new opportunities to learn and grow. You see it in the 18 years Deb spent in nursing, quickly rising from an RN to healthcare management. Always looking for innovative solutions, she was actively involved in developing strategic initiatives for a regional plan to serve the uninsured. A graduate of Penn State (She and Joe got engaged at the Lion Shrine), Deb has a Master’s Degree in Health Administration and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Joe brought the same insightful, solutions-based approach to his professional endeavors. For many years Joe served in a variety of positions in the radio and television industries, from on-air talent to sports department producer. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, he embarked on a successful career developing metering equipment for power substations. Joe was involved in every aspect of their development, from the initial concept to the circuit design and production.
